Vangie's Kitchen Corner: A Down East cookbook

By Evangeline Knowlton

The late Evangeline Knowlton collected the recipes of three generations of family and friends. An accomplished cook in her own right and food columnist for nine years, Vangie included many recipes from the family's popular Stonington hostelry, which was noted for its cuisine.

In September 1980, the weekly newspaper Island Ad-Vantages in Stonington, Maine, published the first column of “Vangie’s Kitchen Corner.” Three years later the column also became a regular feature in The Weekly Packet, Blue Hill, Maine.

More than a series of recipes, the column contained explanations, commentary and often snippets of letters from contributors. Most of the book’s content has been drawn from those years of published columns.

“Whenever my wife needed a recipe that would produce a dish of excellence, she would open Vangie’s Kitchen Corner and she would know the result would be wonderful….We always thought of [Vangie] as part of our family.”

—Roger Greenlaw
